When Young People Teach Us How to Believe - San Luís Potosí
In 2015 we gathered at the Lourdes Conference Center in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Ninety-two people participated: Deaf young adults, pastoral workers, interpreters, support staff, and volunteers. During an intense week of work, faith, and community, we experienced deeply inspiring moments that reminded us that true learning often comes from those we least expect.
Our days began at 7 a.m. and rarely ended before 11 p.m. It was a week full of activities, challenges, and moments of growth.
We worked with Deaf young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, encouraging them to stay involved, support one another, and share their life experiences honestly.
At the same time, we spent many hours working with Deaf adults who hope to become pastoral workers in their communities.
Our more experienced interpreters mentored nine interpreters in training, creating an environment of constant learning.
By the end of the week, it felt as if the Deaf young people were the ones teaching us adults how to live with faith, courage, and hope.
When we all left, we were tired… but deeply grateful for everything we had experienced together.
