Where it all began – Miami

The first DCYIA Encuentro took place in 2002 at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. Deaf young people from Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, and the United States gathered for a week of community, prayer, shared experiences, and reflection about their future. What began as conversations among pastoral leaders and members of the Deaf community became a historic first step toward building connections across cultures, languages, and borders. During this week, participants also shared dialogue and prayer with students from the university’s graduate program in Deaf Ministry, creating a space of learning, friendship, and discovery that would later shape the future of DCYIA.

Young Deaf people from across the Americas gathered in Miami to share their life experiences, their faith, and their hopes for the future.

The Encuentro took place at the same time as the graduate program in Deaf Ministry at St. Thomas University, allowing participants and students to learn from one another through discussion and prayer.

For many participants, it was the first time meeting Deaf young people from other countries and cultures.

The week included reflection, community life, shared prayer, and moments of joy together—including a memorable day trip to Disney World.

“One of the great characteristics of DCYIA is that as an organization, we are always willing to learn.”

— Dr. Ian Robertson

The first Encuentro also revealed important challenges. Travel restrictions prevented many young people from attending, reminding the team of the realities Deaf communities face across borders.

Despite the challenges, the gathering became a moment of learning for everyone involved and inspired the team to continue building what would become DCYIA

The presence and encouragement of Archbishop Patrick Kelly brought hope and inspiration to the Deaf and hearing participants alike.

Review

I was deeply impressed by how Deaf youth from the United States and Canada knew and shared the Bible so naturally, even through storytelling and representations. Everyone participated enthusiastically in the talks and celebrations, although I felt some topics, like leadership, could have been explored more deeply. This Encuentro had a deep impact on me. At the end, I promised God I would organize something similar in Venezuela, and in 2004 and 2005 I was able to organize the first and second Encuentros of Deaf Catholic youth in my country.
